With the Soviet-Afghan war ending in 1989, the US no longer relies on Pakistan to contain the Soviet Union. So in 1990 the Pakistani nuclear program is finally recognized and sweeping sanctions are applied (see June 1989). [Gannon, 2005] Journalist Seymour Hersh will comment, “The certification process became farcical in the last years of the Reagan Administration, whose yearly certification—despite explicit American intelligence about Pakistan’s nuclear-weapons program—was seen as little more than a payoff to the Pakistani leadership for its support in Afghanistan.” [New Yorker, 3/29/1993] The government of Pakistan will keep their nuclear program a secret until they successfully test a nuclear weapon in 1998 (see May 28, 1998). A sixth person on the FBI's list, Saudi national Waleed Al Shehri, is living in Casablanca, according to an official with Royal Air Moroc, the Moroccan commercial airline. According to the unnamed official, Al-Shehri lived in Dayton Beach, Fla., where he took flight training at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Now he works for a Moroccan airline. On Sept. 22, Associated Press reported that Al-Shehri had spoken to the U.S. embassy in Morocco.

This anti-Bush radio ad is among the worst distortions we've seen in what has become a very ugly campaign. It states as fact some of the most sensational falsehoods that Michael Moore merely insinuated in his anti-Bush movie Farenheit 9/11. The ad was released Oct. 25 by The Media Fund, an independent Democratic group run by former Clinton deputy chief of staff Harold Ickes. It falsely claims that members of the bin Laden family were allowed to fly out of the US "when most other air traffic was grounded," though in fact commercial air traffic had resumed a week earlier. The ad also falsely claims that the bin Laden family members were not "detained," when in fact 22 of them were questioned by the FBI before being allowed to leave -- and their plane was searched as well. And by the way, the man who gave approval for the flight wasn't Bush or even any of his close aides, it was former White House anti-terrorism chief Richard Clarke, now one of Bush's strongest critics.

Father Mohammad Alsheri said in a "20-20"- interview, Waleed had no flying experience. Then he left for the first time in his live his town for a trip to Medina. His father said, he had a strong sense of humour, was live loving, in contact with his father and called him in January 2001, 8 months before 911, he would be "on his way home". He never called back. His father never got an official visit by the FBI and learned from his son's death from the news and local newspapers. Saudi Authrities told him, that they had no hard evidence, that his son was involved in the hijack.

The FBI told us that the 9/11 flights were taken over by 19 hijackers, each group having a replacement pilot, who then aimed to fly their plane into a given target. But one common objection to this is that the hijackers didn't appear on the passenger manifests for those flights, and therefore weren't on the planes at all. There are several arguments put forward to support this, and we'll examine the main ones here.

As chronicled in a 2004 report by the 9/11 Commission, the 11 September 2001 attacks were carried out by 19 hijackers, and planned and organized by numerous additional members of al-Qaeda. The first hijackers to arrive in the United States were Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi, who settled in the San Diego area in January 2000. They were followed by Mohamed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi, and Ziad Jarrah early in the summer of 2000 to undertake flight training in south Florida. The fourth pilot, Hani Hanjour, arrived in San Diego in December 2000. In the spring and early summer of 2001, the "muscle hijackers", who were trained to help overpower and take over the aircraft, arrived.

Mohamed Atta was the pilot of the first plane that struck the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 and was the leader of the 19 hijackers responsible for the attacks of that day. Born in Egypt on September 1, 1968, Atta grew up in Cairo and studied architecture at Cairo University. He spent 1993-1999 in Hamburg, Germany, where he studied the urban landscapes of Aleppo and became increasingly more religious and began to embrace fundamentalist causes. In 1998, the Hamburg cell of al Qaida was born at Atta's apartment in Hamburg. Atta was monitored by the CIA in Germany starting in 2000, until he relocated to the United States on June 3, 2000.
